“For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing.”

The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church’s Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) has long stood as a vital force within both the church and the broader community. Since its founding in the 19th century, the WMS has played a pivotal role in advancing the spiritual, social, and economic well-being of individuals, with particular emphasis on uplifting women and children.

Established during a time when women had limited opportunities for leadership in religious and social spheres, the WMS created a powerful platform for women to organize, lead, and serve. In doing so, the society broke significant barriers, empowering women to take active roles in ministry and community outreach. This pioneering legacy continues to inspire generations and affirms the AME Church’s enduring commitment to social justice and equality.
The lasting impact of the Women’s Missionary Society reflects the transformative power of faithful, organized women working together for the greater good. Through steadfast dedication, the WMS continues to make a meaningful difference within the church and throughout the wider community.

Within the 12th Episcopal District, the work of the WMS remains aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These goals provide missionary societies with a universal framework, shared language, and measurable targets that strengthen humanitarian efforts. By addressing priorities such as reducing poverty, improving health, and expanding access to education, the WMS enhances its mission and ensures its initiatives are both impactful and globally relevant.
